If you’re like most HR professionals, you’re likely spending the latter part of January into February ramping up your recruitment efforts. The holiday season is behind you, budgets have been set for the new year and now is as good a time as any to tackle that backlog of hiring you meant to do before the holidays. As such, candidates know that the best time to look for a job is NOW and are standing by waiting to apply. But are you ready for the rush? Today we’ll discuss how to survive the recruiting season.
Reflect on the Previous Year
Surviving the recruiting season means starting with a solid recruiting plan. If you haven’t already done so, now is a good time to reflect on last year. What worked? What didn’t work? What did you want to try, but didn’t? What resources do you need to be successful?
Once you’ve put some thought into what the year should look like, then you’ll be better prepared to take on recruiting season.
Come up with a Plan
Once you’ve reflected on last year, determine your company’s recruiting needs so that you can come up with a plan that will meet those needs. Pay attention to when those needs need to be fulfilled so that you can manage your time appropriately. Also, pay attention to your budget and how you’re going to best spend it in the coming year.
Prioritize Your Needs
January and February are typically the best time to hire new employees. Therefore, once you’ve established a list of needs, prioritize the list and start a defined plan for each position.
While general recruiting strategies (such as writing a job description, creating a scorecard, making an offer, etc.) should be applied toward every candidate, where you target those candidates may vary depending on the needs of the group.
Tap into Your Network
Networking is critical for recruiting, no matter what time of year we’re talking, but especially critical if you plan to survive the recruiting season. Consider the positions that you have open as well as the networking groups you participate in. If you’re the only recruiter in your company, refer back to the previous point and tap into the network that will boost the most results for the most pertinent need. However, if there are more than one of you, divide and conquer. Don’t limit yourself to online groups, this is the time to dress your best and rub a few elbows.
Maximize your Marketing Budget
If you’re going to be successful and survive the recruiting season, you’ll require a marketing budget with real money. Yes, you’ll need it to post jobs to various online boards, but don’t ignore social media. There’s nothing more important in today’s job market in terms of marketing and gaining new recruiting leads than social media. If you’re unfamiliar with how to get the most out of social media, do a little research or hiring a social media consultant to help you get the most out of it.
While it’s possible to recruit candidates for free, top talent is best reached by boosting your search and spending a little money.
Manage your Time
Be careful not to fall into a rabbit hole when it comes to networking or social media. It’s possible that in the process of looking for the right candidate for your company, that you could lose focus. Consider learning to manage your time better so that you can free up time to spend in more productive ways.
